Boxing is more than just a sport at East Area Academy Gym. It is a powerful tool for building confidence, discipline, and resilience among young people facing tough challenges. Since March 2023, the partnership between Sid, the head coach at East Area Academy, and The Fatherhood Project (TFP) has opened doors for over 30 youth to experience high-level boxing training. This collaboration has created opportunities that go beyond the gym, helping young people prepare for life’s challenges and inspiring them to push beyond their limits.

Sid’s Role in Building a Strong Boxing Community
Sid has been the cornerstone of East Area Academy Gym for several years. His dedication to coaching and mentoring youth has made the gym a welcoming and motivating place. When The Fatherhood Project started in March 2023, Sid was the first community partner to join forces. This partnership allowed the gym to reach more young people who might not have had the chance to train otherwise.
Sid’s coaching style focuses on discipline, technique, and mental toughness. He pushes the youth to train hard but also supports them in building confidence and self-respect. Many of the young boxers have seen improvements not only in their physical skills but also in their attitude toward challenges outside the gym.
The Fatherhood Project’s Impact on Youth Access
Before the partnership with The Fatherhood Project, some young people struggled to find funding to join the gym. The Fatherhood Project provided the necessary support to cover training costs, equipment, and access to quality coaching. This funding has been a game-changer for many families.
Thanks to this support, over 30 youth have trained at East Area Academy Gym since March 2023. The project also connects youth with outreach support, such as the Bedford outreach team, which helps families stay engaged and supported throughout their journey.
One standout example is Joshua, an under-16 boxer who has been consistently supported by TFP and the outreach team. Joshua’s parent received assistance from the Bedford outreach team, which helped keep Joshua on track. His dedication and access to training have led him to win a tournament, showing how important consistent support and opportunity are for young athletes.
Training That Goes Beyond Basics
The training at East Area Academy Gym is intense and designed to prepare youth for real challenges. The Fatherhood Project youth even get the chance to spar with Marlon, the CEO of TFP, who competes in semi-professional bouts. Marlon’s involvement adds a unique layer of inspiration and motivation for the young boxers.
Marlon’s fights are not just about competition; they are about showing young people how to face discomfort, push through fear, and survive tough situations. This message resonates deeply with the youth, encouraging them to apply the same mindset in their daily lives.
The Gym as a Pillar of Support
For many young people, East Area Academy Gym is more than a place to box. It is a community pillar that offers structure, support, and a safe space. Sid’s leadership and the partnership with The Fatherhood Project have made the gym accessible and welcoming.
The gym’s environment helps youth develop life skills such as:
Discipline and focus
Goal setting and achievement
Handling pressure and setbacks
Building respect and teamwork
These skills are essential for navigating difficult situations both inside and outside the ring.
Opportunities Still Available for Youth
The partnership between Sid, East Area Academy Gym, and The Fatherhood Project continues to grow. There are still spaces available for young people who want to join this supportive boxing community. The gym welcomes youth of all skill levels, especially those who want to prepare for tough situations and build resilience.
